4-24-13

This is from a photo I took a couple of years ago in the Needles District, Canyonlands Utah. I had to ask my friend Jon Foote to figure out the exact location. He says it is on the trail to Chestler Park before you cross Elephant Canyon. I don't know if that means anything to any of you, but there you have it.

This is another from my studio window. It is the late afternoon sky looking north east.

And yet another from my window in the early evening. We had some snow early in the week that was still hanging in the grasses. I like this one better than the one I did of this last week. I tool a little more time with it, trying to get the play of warms and cools in the snow.

In figure this week, I went bigger. This is 24x16. It was fun but I didn't have time to work with any color.

more and faster

It's been staying light a little bit longer these days, and a few nights this week I've painted looking out my studio  window with about twenty min. of light left. This is a magical time, and I've always really wanted to capture the colors for that time of day. I just didn't worry about the drawing and really tried to get the colors  right and fast.

This one while quite simple is really striking to me. I am pretty sure I nailed the colors for that particular evening and it just seems to glow.

I painted this this afternoon. It is another larger painting at 12"x16"

Another figure.

This is another painting at dusk. It had snowed and the grass was still holding it's load.

later this afternoon it was too cold and windy to paint out side, so I got inspired to paint from one of my desert photos.

one two hour painting and one that took days

After working on this all week, I am finally calling it done. I am pretty happy with it.

Yesterday, it was cold and snowy so I settled down in my studio to paint on the land scape seen above, but when I looked out the window and saw this scene, I had to paint it. So I put off the long painting and settled into a two hour plein air session from the comfort of my own home.
And the blog post wouldn't be complete without the Weds night figure.

a little painting

Today Sharon and I parked ourselves south east of the old train depot and painted. This is what I came up with.

Weds. night produced this one.

I'm trying to paint a larger version of the painting I made last Sunday. As you can see here, I am working from both a photograph as well as my study. I's going OK, but working on it is not nearly as much fun as painting from life.
This is what I've got so far.
